Plot summary
King Louis XIII of France is glad when his queen gives him a son and heir. A second boy follows, a twin, and Cardinal Richelieu judges the child a danger to the throne and a possible focus for revolt. The infant is taken to Spain and raised there in secret. Peace depends on no one learning that the king had a twin, so Constance, the woman D'Artagnan loves, is sent to a convent. D'Artagnan, a Musketeer, hears of it and gathers the others to free her, and the cardinal who arranged for the boy to vanish moves to stop them.

The Iron Mask is the only film in which Douglas Fairbanks's character dies at the end; the closing scene shows the once-again youthful Musketeers reunited in death, moving on to what the final title calls "greater adventure beyond".- The surviving synchronized score, sound effects and theme song, complete on Vitaphone disks, were left off the DVD reissue because using them would put the DVD in the public domain; a new score was instead commissioned from Carl Davis.
