South (1919) on Netflix

Plot summary

In 1914 the Endurance carries Sir Ernest Shackleton and his party south on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Ice breaks under the ship's bow as it works toward Antarctica, and then a turn in the weather seals the channel and pins the vessel fast. A camera goes along, recording the men, their seventy dogs and the wildlife of the region, penguins most of all. That footage, photographed on the expedition itself, became a silent documentary shown in London as In the Grip of the Polar Pack Ice. The British Film Institute restored the film, adding tinting and a piano soundtrack, and a digitally remastered version followed.
