Inez Courtney
Biography
Inez Courtney was an American actress who worked on the Broadway stage and in Hollywood films. She was born in Amsterdam, New York, and first earned a living in a New York City millinery shop before turning to performing. Singing and dancing on stage brought her a first role in The Little Whopper, a 1919 musical. New York theater audiences came to know her through the college comedy Good News, staged in 1927, and she also appeared in Spring Is Here in 1929 and America's Sweetheart in 1931. In the early 1930s she left Broadway for Hollywood, where her screen debut was Cousin Betty in Loose Ankles in 1930; she went on to appear in 58 films between 1930 and 1940. Her film credits included The Raven (1935), Suzy (1936) and The Shop Around the Corner (1940), and Turnabout in 1940 was her last. She died in 1975.

Before her theatrical career, Courtney was a millinery apprentice in New York City. A 1937 newspaper account says the forelady caught her tap-dancing and singing a German-dialect song in a long-plumed hat, and she lost that first job.
