Biography

Terry Kinney is an American actor and theater director who in 1974 helped start the Steppenwolf Theatre Company along with Gary Sinise and Jeff Perry. Born in Lincoln, Illinois, he has worked in theater since that founding, acting in and directing many productions, among them the Steppenwolf staging of Orphans and Lanford Wilson's Balm in Gilead. His later directing included Neil LaBute's reasons to be pretty and Wilson's Fifth of July. On screen he began with a 1986 appearance on Miami Vice and became best known as Tim McManus, the idealistic unit manager on HBO's prison drama Oz, two episodes of which he also directed. His film roles include Todd Carter in Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), Uncle David in Fly Away Home (1996) and Sara's estranged father in Save the Last Dance (2001). He has also appeared in The Mentalist, Being Human and Billions from 2016 to 2023.
