Plot summary
Harry Donovan paints forgeries of famous artists in New York, though he wants to be known for his own work. His father, the painter Milton Donovan, wants him to give up copying, and an exhibition of Harry's own paintings has just been canceled. Three art dealers offer him $550,000 to forge a lost Rembrandt: Alistair Davies, Ian Hill and Agachi. Harry studies the master in Amsterdam and chooses a portrait of Rembrandt's blind father. In Paris he meets Professor Marieke van den Broeck, a Rembrandt scholar who tells him she is a student, though one of the source books he uses is hers, and the two become involved. She helps him reach a Rembrandt being restored at the Louvre, where he scrapes varnish from the original canvas.
