Plot summary
After escaping the Misty Mountains, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield are hunted by orcs. The skin-changer Beorn shelters them and lends horses, and they enter Mirkwood, where Gandalf leaves them. Lost on the forest path, the dwarves are bound by giant spiders; Wood-elves under Thranduil take them prisoner. Invisible with his ring, Bilbo frees them in empty wine barrels and they float down the river to Lake-town, where the bargeman Bard smuggles them inside. Thorin promises the town a share of Erebor's treasure in return for arms. Their goal is the hoard of the dragon Smaug, and Bilbo's task is to steal the Arkenstone from within the mountain.
