Plot summary
In 1941 on Guernsey, four friends stopped by soldiers after curfew avoid arrest by claiming they came from a book club meeting, which they name the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Five years later, Juliet Ashton is in London promoting a book she wrote as Izzy Bickerstaff and has been contracted through her publisher and friend Sidney Stark to write for The Times Literary Supplement. Dawsey Adams, a Guernsey man who has ended up with a volume of Charles Lamb's essays that was once hers, asks her help finding more work by that author and mentions the society's Friday meetings. Juliet sends Tales from Shakespeare and asks how the group began, then decides to write about it. Sidney has doubts. Before boarding the ferry, she accepts a proposal from her boyfriend Mark Reynolds.
