Plot summary
The Carters are driving to San Diego to celebrate the silver wedding anniversary of Big Bob and Ethel. Lynn, Brenda and Bobby are their children; Doug is Lynn's husband, Catherine their baby, and Beauty and Beast the family's German Shepherds. At a gas station, the old attendant sends them onto another road through the hills. A hidden spike strip blows their tires, and the car, towing a trailer, crashes. Bob and Doug go their separate ways to seek help while the others wait by the trailer. Their route crosses a government nuclear testing zone, and the wasteland is home to a mutant family.

- Alexandre Aja explained, "We based all our descriptions and directions on real documents, pictures, and footage that we found on the effects of nuclear fallout in Chernobyl and Hiroshima".
- The film is set in New Mexico and strongly implies that a large number of atmospheric nuclear weapon tests were performed in that state; in fact the only atmospheric nuclear detonation in New Mexico was the Trinity test, conducted on July 16, 1945.
