Plot summary
Genevieve Gage, fifteen, and her closest friend Tiana Moore are students in Helverton, Colorado, who spend idle hours in chat rooms talking to people they do not know. One of those contacts, a user with the screen name Captain Howdy, appears to be another student and invites them to a party at his house. When neither girl comes home the next morning, Genevieve's mother, Toni, tells her husband, Mike Gage, a local police officer, who begins a search with a younger colleague. Mike learns that the man behind the screen name practices body art, including tattooing, piercing, branding and scarification, and Mike's niece, Angela Stravelli, tells him that Genevieve met strangers over the Internet, which gives him his first lead.

- The film's conceptual basis has its roots in the fourth track on Twisted Sister's 1984 release Stay Hungry, “Horror-Teria (The Beginning): A) Captain Howdy B) Street Justice”, about a sadistic child murderer named Captain Howdy who walks free on a technicality and is then avenged upon by an outraged mob of parents.
- A planned four-issue comic prequel, Dee Snider's Strangeland: Seven Sins, released its first issue in August 2007 through Fangoria Comics, but the publisher's sudden closure left the remaining three issues unreleased until Scream Factory picked up the series in 2008.
- Strangeland opened at 315 theaters in North America, and during its entire box office run the film grossed a total of just $713,239.
