Plot summary
In Evansville, Indiana, thirteen-year-old twins Sam and Emma Stanton are opposites. Sam plays soccer well and dresses like a tomboy, though she would like boys to notice her. Emma is popular, cares about fashion and make-up, and wishes she were better at sports. Their father Jerry coaches the Hurricanes, a school soccer team backed by the sports equipment shop where he works, and when the competition becomes co-ed, his wife Denise, a psychologist, pushes him to choose Emma. Just as the second round of tryouts finishes and Jerry is set to take Sam, the Buzzards coach Willard Holmes selects Sam instead. Sam is unenthusiastic about a team that has not won in years, while Emma finds it hard to please her dad, so the sisters arrange a swap.
