Plot summary
Arnold Beckoff works as a female impersonator in New York City in 1971. He wants love and respect in a world that does not seem made for him, and neither comes easily. He meets Ed, a bisexual schoolteacher, and the two fall in love. Ed is uncomfortable with his own sexuality, and he leaves Arnold for a girlfriend named Laurel.

- Matthew Broderick initially turned down the role of Alan because he was recovering from a car accident in Northern Ireland; Tate Donovan was cast in his place, but Fierstein fired Donovan two days into rehearsals when Broderick changed his mind.
- Ella Fitzgerald's manager Norman Granz pulled her recurring song from the film's soundtrack album by invoking a contract clause, reportedly out of spite because he was unhappy with the fee the record company offered for using it.
- The original stage play ran over four hours, but New Line Cinema insisted the film version be restricted to a running time of two hours, which meant much editing and many excisions.
