Vernon Dent

Biography

Vernon Dent was an American comic actor whose career took in more than 400 films, among them many short subjects for Columbia Pictures. Born in San Jose, he became a regular at the Mack Sennett studio in the early 1920s, working with comics including Harry Langdon, Billy Bevan and Andy Clyde; opposite Langdon he played both easygoing pals and blustery authority figures. When Sennett scrapped his contracts for sound, Dent went to Educational Pictures in 1929, and reunited with Langdon there in 1932 for two-reel comedies. He moved to Columbia's shorts unit in 1935 and had his greatest success there, supporting Buster Keaton, Andy Clyde, Charley Chase, Eddie Quillan and many others. He also appeared occasionally in features, among them The Harvey Girls and Kill the Umpire. He appeared in more Three Stooges comedies than any other supporting player, 96, and joined them on a live CBS broadcast of The Frank Sinatra Show in 1952.
