Ralph Graves
Biography
Ralph Graves was an American actor, screenwriter and director whose screen career ran from 1918 to 1949 and took in more than 90 films. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he built up dozens of credits, about half of them for Mack Sennett, before writing, directing and starring in Swell Hogan in 1926, a Howard Hughes production that was later destroyed on Hughes's orders. He went on to direct four more features in 1927 and wrote or supplied stories for a dozen others, but acting remained his main work. Frank Capra, whom he met at Sennett's studio, cast him in several pictures, among them Flight in 1929, based on a story by Graves, and he also appeared in a run of adventure films alongside Jack Holt. He retired from films in 1949 and died in 1977.
