Plot summary
Simon Aron, the son of a dead friend, was left in the care of Nicholas, Duc de Richleau, and Rex Van Ryn. In 1929 the duke visits Simon and finds strange markings and a pentagram in the house, along with a gathering of guests he takes for a satanic cult. De Richleau, who knows the occult, and Rex take Simon and a young initiate, Tanith Carlisle, away from the group, interrupting a May Day rite on Salisbury Plain where the Devil appears as the Goat of Mendes. The four of them then take refuge in the country home of the duke's niece, Marie Eaton, and her husband Richard. The cult answers to Mocata, a Satanist who commands genuine occult power.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Devil Rides Out (1968)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- First proposed in 1963, the film waited four years to go ahead, once censorship worries over Satanism had eased; production finally began on 7 August 1967.
- Leon Greene's dialogue was dubbed by Patrick Allen, and no-one involved could quite remember why, not even Sarah Lawson, who was married to Allen. Allen said it was because Greene, the opera singer, "sang" his lines and the producers wanted them delivered in a better manner.
- The A-side of British rock band Icarus's debut single "The Devil Rides Out" was inspired by the advance publicity for the film; the single's release was timed to coincide with the premiere and the band was invited along, though the song does not appear in the film.
- Lee said in a later interview that Wheatley was so pleased with the adaptation of his book that he gave the actor a first edition of the novel.
