Biography

Paul Eddington was an English actor who built a long career in small and supporting parts before finding fame in middle age through two BBC sitcoms. He was born in Paddington, London, and grew up in St John's Wood, and he took up acting in his teens, appearing with ENSA, before working with Sheffield Repertory Theatre. A corrupt policeman in a 1956 Dixon of Dock Green episode was his first major television role; he later played Will Scarlet in The Adventures of Robin Hood and had a supporting part in The Devil Rides Out (1968). He became a household name as Jerry Leadbetter in The Good Life (1975 to 1978) and then as Jim Hacker in Yes Minister (1980 to 1984) and Yes, Prime Minister (1986 to 1988). Those sitcoms brought him four BAFTA shortlistings, and he was twice nominated for an Olivier Award; he was made a CBE in 1987. He died in 1995.
