Biography

John Bown, a British actor, film director and screenwriter, trained at LAMDA and later went into repertory in Salisbury and Birmingham. Born in Corfe Mullen, Dorset, he played Jack Hunter when The Rose Tattoo had its British premiere under Sam Wanamaker in 1958, and he was Richard Rich in A Man for All Seasons when it premiered in 1960. He wrote and directed the short film North West Confidential and the feature Monique before returning to acting. From 1976 to 1979 he was with the Royal Shakespeare Company, taking part in 16 productions across seven major theaters. His screen credits included Antodus in Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) and the lead in The Big Spender, and he was best known for playing Commander Neil Stafford during Doomwatch's final season.
