Plot summary
A malfunction aboard a United States satellite sends a surveillance beacon to Australia, where a large crocodile swallows it. At the CIA, Deputy Director Reynolds and Agent Buckwhiler send Robert Wheeler and Vaughn Archer to retrieve the beacon, while Department Director Ansell secretly hires Jo Buckley to get it first. The crocodile lives in a river beside Brozzie Drewitt's cattle station, and she plans to kill it for preying on her cattle. Sam Flynn of the Department of Fauna and Fisheries asks her to let professionals relocate it and brings in the Crocodile Hunter and his wife.

- Nothing for the documentary scenes was ever scripted. When the actors from the scripted dramatic scenes entered the Irwins' world for a few brief scenes, Steve, who knew nothing about the script or plot, was told by Stainton what was about to happen so he could prepare and ad-lib.
- Collision Course turned out to be Steve Irwin's final film appearance before his death in 2006; it also gave his wife Terri Irwin her film debut.
- The teaser trailer was a "special shoot" set inside the MGM logo itself, with Steve interacting with Leo the Lion, MGM's mascot.
- Collision Course was shot in two aspect ratios, 1.85:1 for the scenes with Steve and Terri and 2.35:1 for the plot about the Australian farmer and the CIA, so in theaters and on DVD the 1.85:1 image appears with pillar boxing.
