Plot summary
In 1934 London, Jimmy Erskine is the theater critic of The Daily Chronicle, and he writes savage reviews of any play or performer that fails to meet his standards. The paper is a tabloid, and its owner dies; his son, Viscount David Brooke, takes charge and asks Erskine to tone down his criticism. Erskine's secretary is Tom Turner, who is also his lover. After the two of them are arrested for homosexuality, Brooke dismisses Erskine along with other older employees. Unwilling to lose his influence, Erskine persuades Nina Land, a young actress, to seduce Brooke, promising her glowing reviews in return.

- Colin Firth, Simon Russell Beale and Paapa Essiedu were set to star in Curtain Call in November 2020, but by June 2022 they were no longer involved when the film was retitled The Critic; Ian McKellen, Mark Strong, Lesley Manville, Romola Garai, Ben Barnes and Alfred Enoch joined Gemma Arterton instead.
