Plot summary
Every day Rachel Watson rides a train into New York City, though she no longer has a job to go to. She watches her old house, where her ex-husband Tom lives with his new wife Anna and their baby Evie, and, a few doors down, the home of Megan and Scott Hipwell. Megan had been the nanny for the couple, and had just quit. Rachel drinks heavily and blacks out, and remembers little of what she does. One afternoon she sees Megan embracing and kissing a man who is not her husband, and she gets off the train angry. She wakes at her friend Cathy's place, bruised and cut, remembering nothing of that night, and learns that Megan Hipwell is missing.
