Trailer

Plot summary

In 1973, sixteen-year-old John Paul Getty III lives in Rome, where a Calabrian crime group seizes him and demands $17 million for his release. His mother, Gail Harris, has no money of her own: she gave up alimony when she divorced Paul's father in 1971, keeping custody of her children instead. She goes to the English estate of her former father-in-law, the oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, to ask him to pay. He refuses, arguing that paying would invite more kidnappings of the family, and assigns Fletcher Chace, who negotiates for Getty Oil and once worked for the CIA, to look into the case. Reporters take up the story, and Gail is trailed by photographers while Paul is held somewhere in southern Italy.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about All the Money in the World (2017)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Two months before the premiere, sexual misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey, who played J. Paul Getty, led to his removal; Christopher Plummer replaced him and 22 scenes were reshot in eight days, a month before the rescheduled Christmas release.
  • Mark Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million for the reshoots while Michelle Williams received only $1,000, a disparity that sparked a debate about Hollywood's gender pay gap.
  • The only shot of Kevin Spacey left in the finished film is a wide shot of Getty getting off a train in the desert, kept because reshooting it would have been too expensive or complex before the deadline; his face is not visible.
  • After backlash over the pay disparity between Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams, Wahlberg announced he would donate the $1.5 million reshoot fee to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Williams' name.
  • Ridley Scott claimed Christopher Plummer had been his original choice to play J. Paul Getty, but said studio executives had persuaded him to cast the "bigger name" Kevin Spacey.
  • Replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer and reshooting 22 scenes cost $10 million, pushing the film's final production budget to $50 million.
  • After the misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey, the film's AFI Fest premiere on November 16 was canceled, and its Academy Awards campaign, initially built around Spacey's supporting role, was reworked.
  • Natalie Portman was pursued to play Gail Harris before Michelle Williams was cast, with Kevin Spacey circling the role of J. Paul Getty and Mark Wahlberg in talks for an unspecified part.
