Trailer

Plot summary

On the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, Cory Lambert tracks predators for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. During the winter he comes upon the body of Natalie Hanson, eighteen and a member of the Northern Arapaho tribe, half buried in the snow. FBI special agent Jane Banner arrives during a snowstorm to look into the case. An autopsy shows that Natalie was raped and that she died from breathing subzero air, but the medical examiner will not call the death a homicide, and Banner cannot get added help from her supervisors. Natalie's father, Martin, says his daughter had a new boyfriend whose name he never learned. Her brother Chip names him Matt Rayburn, a security guard at an oil drilling site in the mountains.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Wind River (2017)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • After the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse scandal broke in October 2017, Lionsgate took over Wind River's home media and streaming release and The Weinstein Company's name and logo were removed from the credits, trailer and packaging. Taylor Sheridan demanded the company be deleted from the materials and that all money Weinstein would have made on the film go to charity.
  • Taylor Sheridan said he wrote Wind River after learning about the "thousands of actual stories just like it", the high number of Indigenous women who are victims of sexual assault and murder, on and off reservations, and made the film to raise awareness of the issue.
  • Taylor Sheridan drew criticism for claiming Wind River "actually changed a law", the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act signed by President Biden in 2022; Native rights attorney Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee) called the claim "gross" for discrediting Native advocates, in a piece published by IllumiNative.
