Plot summary
Haraway is a town of inventors and strange creatures, watched over by the Ancients, a military force that resembles plague doctors. When a sickness called the Blight leaves much of the population ill and some of them unable to use their limbs, the townsfolk turn to two brilliant scientists for help. Their different ideas split Haraway into two camps, one devoted to machinery and one to biological engineering, and the two sides refuse to work together. A robot girl, given life by her mechanical creator, sets out into this ordinary world. She meets Huxley, a mutant boy who was made with two hearts, and the two become friends. Their bond has to hold against the quarrel between their families and the divisions of the town around them.
