Plot summary

Tarabas learns of a prophecy that a child of royal blood, no more than ten years old, will bring down his kingdom. The news shakes him, because he had thought himself invincible. He sends his clay soldiers to take royal children from every kingdom, among them the babies of Fantaghirò's sisters, Catherine and Caroline, and his mother, Xellesia, disapproves. Fantaghirò and Romualdo guard the babies; during the battle Romualdo ends up in a cursed river, which turns him into a statue. The Queen of the Elves tells Fantaghirò that only the Impossible Kiss, given by Tarabas, can restore him. Fantaghirò follows the clay soldiers to find Tarabas.

Kim Rossi Stuart, who played Romualdo in the first two Fantaghirò films, categorically refused to return for the third, so his character's scenes in the third and fourth films were made from old footage, apart from two short scenes he grudgingly agreed to shoot.
Nicholas Rogers, cast as the wizard Tarabas, claimed at his audition he could ride horses but could not even mount one once filming began; Lamberto Bava said his "I love you" line needed three shots combined, and Rogers also injured himself on set and was taken to hospital still wearing his costume.
Fantaghirò 3 was shot over six weeks in the summer of 1993 in the former Czechoslovakia, where torrential rain fell almost without interruption for the entire time of the shooting.

The Black Witch was originally meant to be killed off in the second Fantaghirò film, but the public's highly positive feedback persuaded Lamberto Bava to bring the character back for more films.
