Plot summary
In Rome in 1943, Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario perform in a circus run by Israel. Matilde gives off electricity, Cencio commands insects, Fulvio is covered in hair and has enormous strength, and Mario can bend metal. As the war closes in, Israel proposes that the four leave for America and collects their savings for the journey, while Fulvio argues for the Berlin Zircus, the show the occupying Germans run in the city. Then Israel disappears, and the friends are left without the circus that gave them a place in the world. Matilde goes to look for him, and the others head for the Zircus, the realm of the German pianist Franz.
