Plot summary
Brancaleone da Norcia rides toward the Holy Land with the mad monk Zenone and a ragtag band of underdogs, meaning to join the Crusades. Another company of Christian warriors accuses them of heresy and attacks. Temporarily incapacitated, Brancaleone cannot reach the battle and calls on the Grim Reaper to end his shame. Death answers and gives him one way to redeem his honor: save an infant of royal blood before he dies. Brancaleone stops the assassin Thorz, takes the baby and resolves to bring the child to his father, Bohemond of Taranto, a prince serving in the Crusades. He assembles another company for the journey.
