Plot summary
For longer than anyone can remember, two kingdoms have been at war. In one of them the king has three daughters, and the youngest, Fantaghirò, argues with her father and sisters because she longs to ride into battle. In the forest she meets a mysterious warrior, the White Knight, and secretly learns to fight. There she also crosses paths with Romualdo, newly crowned in the neighboring kingdom, who is enchanted by her eyes and does not know whose daughter she is. Weary of the centuries-old conflict, Romualdo proposes that a single duel decide it. A magical White Witch declares that no one but a daughter of the king can take that duel, so he commands the three girls to disguise themselves as male knights and ride out.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The director Lamberto Bava said his father Mario Bava had wanted to adapt the Italo Calvino fairy tale but never got the chance; Bava revived it and, with Mediaset, co-produced it on no more than the initial budget.
- The first Fantaghirò film was finished in 1990 but then shelved for a whole year, and the sequels were only approved after it turned out to be a success.
- Fantaghirò was meant to be a single film, but the production costs were too high, so it was decided to make it into a miniseries instead.
- To keep costs down, Lamberto Bava's production used costumes pulled from studio inventory and shot in the castles of Prague because it was cheaper.
