Plot summary
A child's voice, frightened and questioning, calls out in the darkness. An old man appears and calms him, urging the boy to look at the wonders of the earth. The old man is a desert shepherd, and the child is his grandson; the tale is told to the whole Bedouin family. Through the boy's eyes the story of the world's beginning unfolds: the creation of the earth, then Adam and Eve in their garden, where a snake's temptation leads them to transgress and be banished. From there the shepherd goes on to the first crime committed by mankind, Cain's murder of his brother Abel, and to the generations that follow. Mankind grows corrupt, but Noah and his family build an ark to save themselves and the animals from the flood.
