Plot summary
At a 13th-century abbey site in the Carpathian Mountains, Dr. Nicolai and Dr. Kathryn Jennings find mosaics and an underground river, and local biologists believe the cave may hold an undiscovered ecosystem. Nicolai brings in American cave divers led by the brothers Jack and Tyler McAllister, with Charlie, Briggs, Strode, Top Buchanan and cameraman Alex Kim. Nicolai learns that the abbey was built to seal the cave, and that local legend tells of winged demons within. A mile below the surface, Briggs loses contact while scouting ahead, and a rockslide seals the tunnel behind the group. Their rescue is not due for twelve days.
