Plot summary
South East London in the Thatcher years offers Frankie little hope, and he wants to be somebody. He badly beats the man his mother lives with, then goes on the run, and family connections get him to the Costa del Sol. There his task is to hand a bag of money to Charlie, a fugitive expat who runs a nightclub. Charlie is impressed that Frankie did not open it, takes a liking to him, and asks him to stay on as his driver. Frankie also meets Charlie's associates, among them Sammy. He comes to prefer the money and status the gang offers over his old life, and joins their smuggling of hashish across the Strait of Gibraltar.
