Biography

Maxie Rosenbloom was an American professional boxer who later became a character actor in Hollywood. He fought as a light heavyweight, scoring points by hitting and moving and proving hard to hit cleanly, a style that earned him the nickname Slapsie Maxie. In 1930 he beat Jimmy Slattery for the NYSAC light heavyweight title and the vacant Ring Magazine belt, holding them until Bob Olin beat him in 1934. Two years before he retired from boxing, he took a Hollywood role in 1937 and went on to play comical or sympathetic big guys, including Each Dawn I Die (1939), with James Cagney and George Raft, and Abbott and Costello Meet the Keystone Kops (1955). He also acted on radio and television, on The Fred Allen Show and in Requiem for a Heavyweight, and was named to The Ring's Boxing Hall of Fame in 1972 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993.

Rosenbloom had an important part in Requiem for a Heavyweight, television's first 90-minute drama, written by Rod Serling and starring Jack Palance. He played a man who spent his nights retelling boxing stories to other ex-boxers in a down-and-out bar.
A change of course
Rosenbloom owned a nightclub called Slapsy Maxie's, which operated in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles, and the club is featured in the 2013 crime film Gangster Squad, set in 1949.
