Antonio Moreno
Biography
Antonio Moreno was an actor and film director who started in silent films and kept working on screen into the 1950s. Born in Madrid, he moved to New York at fourteen and finished his education in Massachusetts before acting in regional theater. In 1912 he went to Los Angeles and signed with Biograph Studios, beginning in bit parts and making his debut in Iola's Promise. Serials opposite Norma Talmadge at Vitagraph made him a matinee idol, and he was often typecast as a Latin Lover. He starred with Greta Garbo in The Temptress (1926) and with Clara Bow in It (1927). His Spanish accent hurt his English-language career once sound arrived, so he acted in and directed Mexican films, including Santa (1932). He later rebuilt his Hollywood career as a character actor, appearing in Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and The Searchers (1956). A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame recognized his contribution to the movies.

Behind the camera
Moreno directed a number of Mexican films that were well received in the early 1930s. One of them was the 1932 drama Santa, which film critics have called one of the best Mexican films of that era.
A first
Moreno was typecast as a Latin Lover in his early films, roles that came before Rudolph Valentino's 1921 breakthrough in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
A change of course
Moreno's career began to falter when sound films arrived in the late 1920s and early 1930s, partly because of his heavy Spanish accent. He continued acting in English language films but also took parts in Mexican films.
Big break
Moreno began co-starring in successful Vitagraph serials opposite Norma Talmadge in 1914, appearances that made him a highly regarded matinee idol by 1915.
