Plot summary
Retired detective Nick Charles comes back to New York with his wife Nora, their baby son Nickie Jr., and their terrier Asta. Colonel Burr MacFay, once a business partner of Nora's father, asks them to his Long Island country house for the weekend. Lois, MacFay's adopted daughter, is there with her fiancé Dudley Horn and MacFay's secretary Freddie Coleman. MacFay has been getting death threats from Phil Church, a former employee used as a scapegoat in illegal dealings who spent ten years in prison. Church says he has dreamed of MacFay's death three times. During dinner someone sets the swimming pool ablaze and kills Lois' dog. Nick calls on Church, who describes how MacFay dies in those dreams and then says he will dream about Nora and the baby; Nick punches him.
