Shelagh Fraser
Biography
Shelagh Fraser was an English actress who trained at Croydon Repertory Theatre Drama School, where she first appeared on stage in 1938. She made her West End debut in 1944 and went on to play a wide range of roles, including in works by Harold Pinter, Alan Ayckbourn, Edward Albee, and Tennessee Williams. On television, she was best known as Jean Ashton in the serial A Family at War, and she appeared in The Professionals. In cinema, she often took demure character parts, and she played Beru Lars in Star Wars (1977). Her other films included The Witches, The Body Stealers, and Hope and Glory. She belonged to the BBC Repertory Company and appeared in more than 500 BBC Radio plays, and she also wrote for the theater and radio and wrote two children's books. Born in Purley, Surrey, she died in 2000.

Behind the camera
Shelagh Fraser wrote a radio play of her own, The Maid's Room, which dealt with a servant and her mistress. She turned Rose Macauley's novel The World My Wilderness and Rebecca West's short story "The Salt of the Earth" into dramas for BBC Radio 4.
First role
In 1944, Fraser took the role of Effie in This Was a Woman, marking her first appearance in the West End, at the Comedy Theatre.
