Marian Marsh
Biography
Marian Marsh was an American film actress who went from silent shorts to leading roles in early sound pictures. Born in Trinidad and raised in Boston and then Hollywood, she took lessons from Nance O'Neil and entered movies with her sister's help, signing with Pathé for shorts as Marilyn Morgan. Small parts in Hell's Angels (1930) and Whoopee! led to a Warner Bros. contract, and in 1930 she starred in the Belasco Theater production of Young Sinners. Her most important role came in Svengali (1931) opposite John Barrymore, and that year she was named a WAMPAS Baby Star. Warner films followed, among them Five Star Final (1931) and The Mad Genius (1931). After a move to RKO, she starred in A Girl of the Limberlost (1934), then signed with Columbia and made Crime and Punishment (1935). She freelanced in the 1940s, made her last film, House of Errors, in 1942, and later appeared on television before retiring in 1959.
