Robert Allen
Biography
Robert Allen was an American actor whose screen career from 1935 to 1944 took in feature films and B-movie westerns. Love Me Forever (1935) gave him his first notable part, the male lead, and won him a Box Office Award. After cowboy star Ken Maynard departed, producer Larry Darmour placed Allen in his Ranger pictures. Billed as Bob Allen, he starred in six of them for director Spencer Gordon Bennet in 1937. Columbia dropped him after Wild Bill Elliott became a hit in 1938's The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok. Allen continued acting in films and also worked on Broadway in Show Boat and Kiss Them for Me during their original runs, then in 1956 he joined the first staging of Auntie Mame. He also did touring shows, soap operas, documentaries, and commercials. In 1964 he became a real estate broker and later returned to the stage occasionally, including in a 1972 Equity Library Theatre revival.
