Mack Swain

Biography

Mack Swain was an early American film actor known for his work in silent comedy. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he first ran his own stock company, the Mack Swain Co., which toured the western and midwestern states before he turned to pictures at Keystone Studios under Mack Sennett. There he appeared in Sennett's comedies, including the Keystone Cops series, and worked alongside Charlie Chaplin on shorts such as Laughing Gas (1914) and Mabel's Married Life (1914). The two also starred in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914), described as the first feature-length comedy. Swain later paired with Chester Conklin as Ambrose and Walrus, and rejoined Chaplin at First National for The Idle Class, Pay Day (1922) and The Pilgrim. He played Big Jim McKay in The Gold Rush (1925). He was honored with a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
