Plot summary
Caroline invites her friend Barbara to the country wedding at which Caroline is to marry Sir Ralph Skelton, a wealthy landowner and local magistrate. The scheming Barbara charms Skelton before the ceremony, and she is the one who becomes his bride. At the reception Barbara meets a stranger, Kit Locksby, and the two are drawn to each other at once, though she is now a married woman. Life as Lady Skelton in the country bores her until her detested sister-in-law Henrietta comes to stay and wins her jewels, among them a ruby brooch that belonged to her mother, in a game of Ombre. Talk of the highwayman Jerry Jackson gives Barbara an idea. Dressed as Jackson, she stops Henrietta's coach and recovers the jewels.

- American censors forced extensive re-shooting before the film could be released in the United States: the women's period dress bodices were judged too low-cut and showed too much cleavage for the US production code.
- Stewart Granger, who had played the romantic lead in The Man in Grey, turned down the part that Mason took in The Wicked Lady.
- The film was based on Magdalen King-Hall's 1945 novel Life and Death of the Wicked Lady Skelton, itself drawn from the disputed events surrounding Lady Katherine Ferrers, wife of the major landowner in Markyate on the London-Birmingham road.
