Biography

Denzil Smith is an Indian actor and producer recognized for his character roles in theater and film. Born in Mumbai, he began as a film executive under Alyque Padamsee, then left corporate work in 1988 to study voice at Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts and pursue stage acting. He became a member of Motley Productions and appeared in Waiting for Godot and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, later working with PrimeTime Theatre on Gauhar, August: Osage County and Sammy. His film work includes Paap (2003), The Lunchbox (2013), Brahman Naman (2016), Viceroy's House (2017), Tenet (2020) and Leo (2023). On television he appeared in Delhi Crime (2019) and received the 2017 Indian Television Academy Award for best actor in a negative role for P.O.W. Bandi Yuddh Ke. He also founded Stagesmith Productions in 2006 to produce Indian English theater.

Smith started out as a film executive under Alyque Padamsee, then CEO of the ad agency Lintas. In 1988 he left that corporate career for stage acting, and he studied voice in Mumbai at the National Centre for the Performing Arts with Dr. Ashok Ranade and Pratap Sharma.
