Plot summary
Chloe Steele, a college student, flies to New York to surprise her father, airline pilot Rayford Steele, on his birthday. Her mother Irene says he cannot come. At the airport Chloe meets investigative reporter Cameron "Buck" Williams. Rayford arrives on his way to fly a plane to London and apologizes for missing the party. He insists all is well with Irene, who has become a proselytizing Christian. Chloe doubts him: she had watched her father flirt with Hattie Durham and had seen that he no longer wore his wedding ring. An airport worker hands her concert tickets for London, showing the trip was planned in advance. Then people begin to vanish, leaving their clothes behind. On Rayford's flight the co-pilot, a flight attendant and every child on board are gone. Passengers panic, and the world falls into chaos.

- The Left Behind film rights were caught in a legal dispute from 2000 until August 7, 2008, when Cloud Ten Pictures settled two lawsuits that novelist Tim LaHaye had filed against it and Namesake Entertainment, co-producer of the original trilogy.
- Left Behind was nominated for three Razzies, for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actor for Nicolas Cage, and lost all three to Saving Christmas, starring Kirk Cameron, who had starred in the original Left Behind films.
- Ashley Tisdale joined the film in January 2013 to play Chloe Steele but dropped out over scheduling conflicts; Cassi Thomson replaced her as Chloe in August 2013, the same month Jordin Sparks joined the lead cast.
