Plot summary

In San Fransokyo, Hiro Hamada is a teenage robotics prodigy who spends his time in illegal bot fights. His older brother Tadashi, a student at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, brings him along, and Hiro meets Tadashi's friends Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred, along with Baymax, an inflatable robot built to care for patients. Hiro builds a swarm of microbots that a neural transmitter controls, and the school accepts him. A fire breaks out at the showcase and an explosion follows. Weeks later Baymax wakes, and a stray microbot leads the pair to a warehouse where the microbots are made in bulk by a masked figure. Hiro arms Baymax for defense, and his friends join him in hunting that figure down.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Big Hero 6 (2014)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • To build San Fransokyo as a digital simulation of a whole city, Disney purchased the actual assessor data for the entire city and county of San Francisco; the final city contains over 83,000 buildings and 100,000 vehicles.
  • For the South Korean release the film was retitled Big Hero and edited to remove indications of the characters' Japanese origin, owing to the tense relations between Korea and Japan: Hiro Hamada became “Hero Armada” and Japanese signage was changed to English. It still caused online controversy over small images resembling the Rising Sun Flag in the protagonist's room.
  • Disney had to assemble a new super-computing cluster just to handle the processing demands of its Hyperion renderer: over 2,300 Linux workstations spread across four data centers, backed by a central storage system with a capacity of five petabytes that also holds archival copies of all 54 Disney Animation films.
  • Baymax's inflatable, vinyl, huggable design came from a research trip to Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute, where the team met DARPA-funded researchers pioneering soft robotics. The researcher, Chris Atkeson, had an inflatable vinyl arm whose practical application would be in healthcare, as a nurse or doctor's assistant.
  • Because they wanted the concept to feel new and fresh, head of story Paul Briggs, who also voices Yama in the film, read only a few issues of the comic, while screenwriter Robert L. Baird admitted he had not read the comic at all.
  • Big Hero 6 is the first Disney animated film to feature Marvel Comics characters, whose parent company was acquired by Disney in 2009.
