Plot summary
In Stockholm, Bosse lives with his guardians, Aunt Edna and Uncle Sixten, who neglect him, and bullies torment him. His best friend is Benke. One night Bosse runs away to look for his father and meets the shopkeeper Mrs Lundin, who gives him an apple and a postcard addressed to the Land of Faraway. He mails the postcard, the apple turns to gold, and he frees a genie trapped in a bottle. Clinging to the genie's beard, Bosse travels to Green Meadow Island, where he learns that his real name is Mio and his father is the King. The King gives him the horse Miramis, and he befriends the gardener's son Jum-Jum, Benke's double. At a whispering well, Mio learns of the knight Kato, who kidnaps children, and the pair set out to face him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mio in the Land of Faraway (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Christopher Lee had to wear a steel hand for his role as Kato, and in 1997 he recalled the 1986 Moscow shoot as a horror story, with uneatable food, unspeakable sanitation, and nothing ever happening before lunch because it took forever to light a scene.
- The Chernobyl disaster occurred while the cast and crew were filming scenes in Ukraine, forcing them to evacuate and postpone shooting for a month; Christian Bale recalled that on their return somebody with a Geiger counter scanned each plate at every dinner.
- Its budget was about fifty million Swedish kronor, making it the most expensive film adaptation of an Astrid Lindgren book made during the author's lifetime.
