Plot summary

Josephine and John long for a daughter with snow-white skin, red lips and ebony hair, and Snow White is born as Josephine dies. Struggling to feed the baby through the winter, John collapses beside a frozen lake; his tears release the Green-Eyed One, a djinn trapped in the ice, who offers him wishes out of gratitude. John asks for milk and then for his wife, but the dead cannot be brought back. Instead the djinn gives John a kingdom and a bride. The djinn then visits Elspeth, the witch sister he abandoned, restores her beauty and offers her John's hand, along with a mirror that lets her watch others unseen. Snow White grows into a princess of sixteen, and the queen's mirrors keep telling her that no one is her equal.

To write the script, writer-director Caroline Thompson went back to the Brothers Grimm's original 1812 written account of Snow White and, finding the 19th century tales far darker than 20th century versions such as Walt Disney's 1937 film, deliberately used those dark elements; she read the folktale as being about "fear of change".
