Plot summary
In 1936, on his way to the Berlin Olympics, Bobby Jones stops in Scotland to see the Old Course at St. Andrews, anxious about the reception he will receive. The story moves back to Atlanta, Georgia, where as a boy he watches his father play golf and learns the game by imitating the better players around him. By fourteen he has won the Georgia State Amateur and reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur, and sportswriters take notice. After the war he plays relief matches alongside Walter Hagen, who becomes his chief rival, and attends Georgia Tech, where he meets Mary Malone, whom he marries. His temper damages his game and his reputation, and at St. Andrews in 1921 he walks off the course. Harry Vardon, his idol, tells him never to quit.
