Plot summary
Beatrix Potter lives with her parents in London, and her mother, Helen, once brought suitors before her, all of whom she refused. Since childhood she has drawn animals and invented stories about them, though her parents never saw her as an artist. She takes her tales to a publishing house, where a new publisher, Norman Warne, likes them and brings out her first children's book.

- Cate Blanchett, who originally suggested Chris Noonan for the role of director, was at one point set to star in the film but apologetically left when one of her other films was green-lit first; Renée Zellweger ended up becoming an executive producer because she was dissatisfied with the script.
- There were no records of Beatrix Potter's speaking voice, so the filmmakers had to guess; the voice was ultimately softened so as not to irritate contemporary audiences with the tight, high voice a woman of Potter's standing at that time may have had.
- Beatrix Potter donated 4,000 acres of farmland she had purchased to the British people through a land preservation trust, and it now forms part of the Lake District National Park in North West England.
- To prepare for the role, Ewan McGregor studied photographs of Norman Warne and visited the modern-day Warne publishing house, while Renée Zellweger read actual letters between Beatrix Potter and Norman Warne and Millie.
- Chris Noonan said it was hard to find anyone who still did cel animation, but he did end up finding such a person in Alyson Hamilton, who already had a great deal of appreciation for Potter's work.
