Plot summary
In the summer of 1982, in a beach town on Long Island, JJ Flynn has finished high school and works at the beach club that his father Jack runs. JJ is restless there. Debbie Espinoza also works at the club; she is confident and ambitious, and he is drawn to her even though he is shy and unsure of himself. Frankie comes back to his hometown after time away and reconnects with Suzy Denner, a girlfriend from his school days. Terry, a would-be songwriter who is JJ's cousin and is living with the family, urges Winky, whose mother Claudia runs the nearby marina, to make music with him. Mello, a loud and fun-loving local married to Lydia, gathers people around him on the boardwalk.
