Tor Johnson
Biography
Tor Johnson, born Karl Erik Tore Johansson in Brännkyrka, Sweden, was a Swedish wrestler who also worked as an actor, most often in low-budget pictures. He moved to California, where he started landing small film parts by 1934, typically as a strongman or weightlifter. He wrestled under the names Thor Johnson and Super Swedish Angel, a ring name meant to separate him from another wrestler called the Swedish Angel. He became friends with director Ed Wood, who cast him in Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957) and Bride of the Monster (1955); writing for Turner Classic Movies, the critic Donald Liebenson called his Plan 9 performance gonzo. He also appeared in Night of the Ghouls (1959). In the early 1960s his film career came to an end following several cheaply made movies that drew poor reviews, yet he went on making television appearances and commercials.

To distinguish himself from Nils Phillip Olofsson, who wrestled as Swedish Angel, Johnson took the ring name Super Swedish Angel. That name came from Maurice Tillet, known as The French Angel.
