Plot summary
Jim MacLaine goes to the funfair where his friend Mike Menary works, on the night of the Kennedy assassination. Jim asks Mike to come along as road manager for the Stray Cats, the touring rock group Jim has joined, and points out that Mike stands to make millions if the group succeeds. Mike accepts and arranges a better van, accommodations and a recording session. In private, Mike tells Jim that Johnny, the band's arrogant singer and guitarist, has to go.

- Adam Faith was cast as Mike Menary after Ringo Starr, who had played Mike in That'll Be the Day, declined to appear in the sequel, not keen to revisit an experience he had lived through as a Beatle.
- The band's American manager was first written as an Italian-American from the Bronx, with Tony Curtis in mind, but Curtis proved too expensive, so native Texan Larry Hagman was cast and the part was rewritten as a Texan.
- David Essex, a real-life rock star by then thanks to his 1973 hit "Rock On", was mobbed by a large crowd of his actual fans while filming the funeral scene at St. Bernard's Church in Northolt, London.
- Screenwriter Ray Connolly said it was not easy for Keith Moon, used to fan adoration playing stadiums with The Who, to be just another actor playing a small part in the fictional band, which did not sit well with his ego.
- Larry Hagman credited his work in Stardust with helping him develop oil baron J.R. Ewing, the character he later played on the TV series Dallas.
- Ray Winstone is seen briefly as an uncredited extra in an early club performance scene, which was his first film appearance.
