Paul Nicholas
Biography
Paul Nicholas is an English actor and singer who began in pop music, forming Paul Dean and the Dreamers before joining the Savages. He later signed with Robert Stigwood and found success in musical theater, playing Claude in Hair and the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar. His films include See No Evil, Stardust, and Tommy, in which he played Cousin Kevin, plus Lisztomania as Richard Wagner and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as Dougie Shears. In 1976 he had three UK Top 20 hits, and his 1977 single Heaven on the 7th Floor reached number one in New Zealand and number six on the Billboard Hot 100. He is best known for his role as Vince Pinner in the BBC sitcom Just Good Friends, which won a BAFTA and earned him a nomination for best comedy performance. He created Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, later appeared in EastEnders as Gavin Sullivan, and has also produced and directed.

A change of course
Nicholas put out a novelty song, "Over the Wall We Go", as his third single in 1967. A young David Bowie wrote and produced it, and at that time Nicholas managed the band the Sweet.
A first
In 1970, while on tour with Richard O'Brien in the musical Hair, Nicholas came across two songs from the Rocky Horror Show, which had not yet been produced, and recorded them with O'Brien.
About the name
Nicholas started his pop career as early as 1960. As Paul Dean, he put together Paul Dean and the Dreamers, and they were hired to open for the Savages, Screaming Lord Sutch's backing band.
First role
Nicholas created the role of Rum Tum Tugger in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats in 1981, returning to the West End after taking part in a workshop with Lloyd Webber.
Behind the camera
In 1990 Nicholas was starring with David Ian in The Pirates of Penzance at the London Palladium. He proposed they work together, both producing and performing in a tour of the New York Shakespeare Festival's take on the Gilbert and Sullivan opera.
