Biography
Pernilla August is a Swedish actress, director and screenwriter who began acting as a child in the theater and at school, and whose professional career started in 1975 when Roy Andersson gave her a small part in Giliap. She trained at the National Academy of Mime and Acting in Stockholm from 1979 to 1982, and before finishing her studies Ingmar Bergman cast her in Fanny and Alexander (1982), beginning a collaboration of two decades. Her performance in The Best Intentions (1992) brought her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. Viewers abroad know her as Shmi Skywalker in the Star Wars films The Phantom Menace (1999) and Attack of the Clones (2002). She also appeared in I Am Dina (2002) and played the Virgin Mary in Mary, Mother of Jesus (1999). She acted at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, and later directed the feature Beyond and the Danish series The Legacy.

Pernilla August began acting professionally in 1975, when Roy Andersson, a director, gave her a small part in the movie Giliap. Later, starting in 1979, she worked with other directors.
Behind the camera
After the 2005 short film Time Bomb, August wrote and directed her first feature, Beyond, in 2010, with Noomi Rapace and Ola Rapace in the cast. Sweden chose that film as its entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards.
Languages
In 2004, Pernilla August provided the voice of Madame Suliman in the Swedish version of Howl's Moving Castle, dubbing the character for that release.
