Biography

Hayden Christensen is a Canadian actor who began on Canadian television at 13 and moved into American television in the late 1990s. Born in Vancouver, he became widely known as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader in the Star Wars prequels, Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), and returned to the role in the Disney+ show Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and the series Ahsoka (2023). He earned praise for Life as a House (2001) and for Shattered Glass (2003), and also appeared in The Virgin Suicides (1999). His honors include Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and the Cannes Film Festival's Trophée Chopard, and he won the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain for Revenge of the Sith. He also had roles in Jumper (2008) and Awake (2007), and in Takers (2010) and Little Italy (2018).

  1. Big break

    Christensen said on May 12, 2000 that he would take the adult Anakin Skywalker role in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. George Lucas picked him after about 1,500 other candidates were reviewed, wanting an actor with the Dark Side's presence.

  2. Getting ready for a role

    While making Revenge of the Sith, Christensen asked Lucas to build a Vader suit for his own body rather than have another actor wear one of the original sets of Vader armor. Lucas agreed, and a suit was engineered for his frame, with extensions so he could reach Vader's 6 ft height.

  3. Beyond film

    Christensen made his London theater debut in 2002 in This Is Our Youth, appearing with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anna Paquin.

  4. First role

    Christensen's acting debut came in September 1993, when he was 12. He had a supporting part on Family Passions, a German-Canadian television series.

  5. A role that slipped away

    In a controversial change to the original Star Wars trilogy, Christensen appeared in the 2004 DVD of Return of the Jedi, taking Shaw's place as the redeemed Anakin Skywalker's Force ghost. Christensen said he had no knowledge of this, and Lucasfilm confirmed it.
